Dean Taylor - Venue Cleaning Manager - Melbourne Exhibition and Convention Centre - Melbourne
Paul Barrett (AKA Digger) - Event Cleaning Manager - Melbourne

Dean Taylor

Name: Dean Taylor
Position: Venue Cleaning Manager - Melbourne Exhibition and Convention Centre
Based in: Melbourne
Business Unit: Australian Operations - Southern Region
Education: Ballarat University (Business Studies)

What is your background?
After many years at University, I decided that an accounting career was not for me. Through a friend I was able to obtain some employment at the Royal Melbourne Showgrounds (RASV) as part of their ground staff team. I was employed by the RASV for 4 years until 1995 when Cleanevent were awarded the contract for the year round cleaning of the Showgrounds. Cleanevent were keen to take me on and I jumped at the opportunity to continue at the Showgrounds (which I loved!) under their wing.

After 6 months at the Showgrounds as a cleaning supervisor, I was given the opportunity to step up to the position of Venue Manager at Optus Oval, which I subsequently called home for two years. Following this, I was given the opportunity to take on a position back at the RASV as the Venue Manager which I jumped at because to me it was "home sweet home" in a more challenging role.

The Showgrounds remained home for 5 years and during this period I was also lucky enough to be given the opportunity to travel overseas and be an Event Manager at one of the large international events that Cleanevent was involved in at the time. This was a great experience! I remained at the Showgrounds until August 2003.

I then worked as an area manager at the Royal Brisbane Show (EKKA) and went straight from there to spend a few weeks in England where I worked as the Night Manager at the Reading Festival under Scott Booth, calling this a huge event is an understatement. During my time in England I was lucky to get the opportunity the visit most of venues Cleanevent service in London and watch Arsenal play!

On my return to Australia, I worked as a "roaming" Venue Manager taking over from permanent Venue Managers while they took annual leave. In June this year I took on my current position as the Venue Manager at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre.

What does your job entail?
As a Venue Manager it is my responsibility to manage a specific venue contract for Cleanevent Australia in direct consultation with the client and to be responsible for the overall planning and execution of all cleaning and waste management activities ensuring operational efficiency and client satisfaction.

What is the most challenging aspect of your work?
Achieving set financial goals for Cleanevent Australia whilst not jeopardizing the clients' requirement for quality service.

What makes Cleanevent a great place to work?
In this busy and challenging industry, being able to see the fruits of your work (and that of your staff) at the end of an event or busy period and the client satisfaction that always follows.

What are some of your lifetime aspirations?
In the short term, spend more quality time with my kids and marry my beautiful fiancée Terri.

Fun fact?
When on holidays with Terri a few years ago in France we visited a small town called Eze. Here we literally bumped into Quentin Tarantino. If my memory serves me correctly I responded to Terri who spotted him with " Who is he?"

A restructure in the company in "96 saw me back in Melbourne as the State Manager of Victoria.
